    One of the hallmarks of Emanu-El throughout the generations has been to innovate to serve the larger Jewish community and add more sacredness to our entire Bay Area community. We are part of a profound and enduring history of Jewish leaders and thinkers who have wrestled with the foundational question: How do we ensure a healthy Jewish community for this generation and the next?

    Among these influential figures was Ahad Ha’am (1856–1927), a Hebrew journalist from present-day Ukraine who was a central figure of cultural Zionism. He envisioned Israel as a cultural hub for the Jewish world, where the gathering of diverse Jewish communities would ignite unparalleled creativity and renewal.

    Ahad Ha’am was not a religious Zionist; he was a cultural Zionist. Ironically, as a non-religious Zionist, he is most remembered for saying: “More than Jews have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jews.”

    Why ironic? We think of Shabbat as a religious holiday during which we sanctify time. Ahad Ha’am grasps that by sanctifying time, time enshrined us as a people. Shabbat matters.
