Arthur M Sackler (1913-87), the New York-born doctor, art collector and philanthropist, was a long-standing advocate for the commonalities between art and science. For Sackler, these were not two separate disciplines but, rather, completely interwoven cultures. As well as contributing groundbreaking research within the field of schizophrenia and becoming a renowned publisher and editor of medical research, Sackler was a dedicated patron of the arts. He established museums and art galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Princeton University, Harvard University and the Smithsonian Institution, among others.
The Sackler Colloquia of the National Academy of Sciences, which takes the form of four individual conferences held annually, has continued to develop his work. It was founded by Dame Jill Sackler to commemorate h
