  • Alcohol factor in murder-suicide

Alcohol appears to have been a significant factor in the ultimate domestic violence episode last weekend that left two young adults from the Coudersport area dead, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

Dead are the victim, 31-year-old Krystal L. Howard, a mother of two; and the shooter, Brenton M. Tubbs, 23. Police said Tubbs took his own life when police arrived outside of the Williams Way home in Homer Township where the two resided. “There are multiple signs that Mr. Tubbs may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident,” said the source.

State police at Denton Hill have released scant details. They said earlier this week that they are still investigating. Potter County District Attorney Andy Watson is also involved in the probe. The source said a note was found at the scene. Police have not disclosed its contents.

Tubbs reportedly left the scene and informed one or more friends that he had murdered Howard. He then returned to the residence. He may also have called 911 to admit to the crime.

Potter County Coroner Kevin Dusenbury released a statement earlier in the week stating that Howard and Tubbs died of gunshot wounds in what he termed a “murder-suicide.”

“This is a tragic event. Patty and I extend our most sincere thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of both individuals,” Dusenbury said.

Dusenbury said he was assisted in the investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Coudersport Volunteer Ambulance Association.

The coroner today declined to answer any questions or provide any further information.

Coudersport-based State Police Monday asked that anyone with information on the incident call them at (814) 274-8690.
