    Abstract

Lyndal Roper grew up in Melbourne, Australia, and graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1977. Immediately after, she went to Germany on a German Academic Exchange Award, where she studied at the University of Tübingen and started archival research in Augsburg, going on to write her doctorate on women in the German Reformation with the late Bob Scribner, finishing her doctorate in 1985. She held a Junior Research Fellowship at Merton College, Oxford, from 1983 to 1986, and, after a brief period working at King’s College, London, took up a Lectureship at Royal Holloway, University of London, where she stayed until 2002. A year at the Institute of Advanced Study in Berlin (1991–2) and another period as a Humboldt Fellow in 1997–98 at the Max Planck Institute for History were major influences. She is married to the historian Nick Stargardt, and in 1996 their son was born. In 2002 she moved to Balliol College, Oxford, where she is Fellow and Tutor in History (Professor 2004), and, with Chris Wickham, she co-edits Past and Present, a major historical journal.
