2.2 The Popularity of Pia desideria in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth
As in the rest of Europe, emblem books—especially those with religious themes—were very popular in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Popularity-wise, Pia desideria clearly stands out against this backdrop.
The presence of a title in ancient book collections can be studied in two ways: by determining the owners of preserved copies on the basis of the surviving provenance notes, and by analyzing book inventories, which in the case of private individuals were usually compiled in connection with inheritance-related matters, and in the case of religious libraries for record-keeping purposes. Both methods are not faultless (not every owner of a book signed it with their name; not everyone who signed it was a reader; inventories of movables account first of all for valuable books, e.g., those with expensive bindings, while unframed ones were sometimes omitted, etc.) and provide highly selective data on the actual reception of a specific title (the number of surviving copies is but a fraction of those kept in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century collections; moreover, the available inventories account for a mere sliver of the actual number of inventories c
