The majority of people in Africa use plant based traditional medicines for their care. Demand for medicinal plants is increasing in Africa as the population grows. The threat posed by over-exploitation of medicinal plants has serious implications on the survival of several plant species, many of which are faced with extinction. The pharmaceutical potentials of African medicinal plants are immense. But constraints and challenges exist at all levels. This paper discusses these constraints and challenges in relation to conservation, science and technology, use of medicinal plants at the local level, the domestic drug production sector, marketing, safety and efficacy requirements. Measures and strategies for enhancing the development of a medicinal and aromatic plants industry in Africa are suggested. I. Memorial Lecture Held in Honour of the Late Prof. Marian Ewurama Addy
A Memorial Lecture has been held in honour of the late Professor Marian Ewurama Addy as part of activities marking the first anniversary of her death. The Lecture was organized by the Department of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology on the topic, “Evidence Based Research into Plant Medicine: The Marian Ewurama Addy factor”. It was delivered by the Dean of the School of Pharmacy, Professor Alexander Nyarko, who was a former student and Research Associate of the Late Prof. Addy.

Prof. Nyarko highlighted some of the studies that late Prof. Addy undertook. He noted that the late Prof. Addy used animal models that mimicked disease states such as allergic asthma and diabetes mellitus and employed the use of pharmacological and biochemical tools to answer scientific questions related to the efficacy of plant medicines.
He quoted Prof. Addy on her mission and strategies for conducting plant medicine research, noting that she undertook research into the scientific basis for the therapeutic actions of local medicinal plants, to corroborate the herbalists’ claim of efficacy.
