Death of Ludwig van Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven, a German composer, died in his apartment in the Schwarzspanierhaus, Vienna, on 26 March 1827 at the age of 56, following a prolonged illness. Well Beethoven went on a Monday — March the 27th 1827. He’d been sick for a while, complaining of stomach pains and bloating. Since the previous Christmas, he’d been so ill he hadn't got out of bed, and his friends knew that that would be the end. He was just 56.
There have always been rumours about what caused Beethoven’s death. Was is syphilis? Was it cirrhosis of the liver from too many nights on the sauce? He did enjoy a drop.
It’s most likely that the actual cause of his death was lead poisoning. As I mentioned, Beethoven was fond of drinking quite a range of wine, but a favourite was a type of wine you could get in those days that was fortified with lead. So his liver packed in, a fact that was confirmed at his autopsy.
